Discussion of Contemporary Alternative Films ‘Darshana’ (2009-2010)

Through this project, WERC endeavored to use a unique mode to educate and sensitize young civil society activists and community workers on gender equality and peace - through a medium of entertainment. The approach stimulated an environment in which all were free to talk, express views and contribute to the subject. Funding provided by the Neelan Tiruchelvam Trust (NTT).

WERC organized 14 film shows for the period 2009/2010 and approached more than 300 individuals from various levels of the society. All the films were screened focused on the topics of sexual and gender based violence, futility of war, women's rights and human rights, social welfare, human relationships and human discriminations etc. Each film was followed by a lively discussion about the theme of the film, cinematography and how the audience felt about it.

A visual resource centre was established at WERC  under this project, enabling partner organizations and other civil society activists to access the necessary films for their similar programmes.
