Enforcing a Zero Tolerance Policy for Rape & Sexual Violence against Women & girls in Sri Lanka (2012-2013)


The project promoted concerted public response against rape and sexual violence against women and girls and thereby calling seriously to end entrenched failure of law enforcement and subscription to the principle rule of law. The Objective was to increase public awareness and condemn rape and sexual violence against women and girls.

Gender Sensitization programmes and workshops were conducted in Monaragala, Ratnapura and Anuradhapura districts targeting Police Officers, Community Leaders, Trishaw Drivers, School Children, and individuals from grassroots levels etc. Also TV and radio talk shows were conducted. In addition, newspaper articles on Gender Based Violence, specifically, promoting ethical and investigative media expose calling for justice in law enforcement were published in all three languages. As part of the project activities, an information help-desk was setup at WERC. The project was funded by the British High Commission in Colombo.
